Dedicated to the GMC classes of 1959,
A group of young men ever so fine.

Separate we came from far and near,
Seeking to make our pathway clear.
Now we know what we did not then,
Knowledge shared by those ladies and men,
Who gave of themselves so we might learn
To think for ourselves, for wisdom to yearn.
From waking at dawn to the bugler’s reveille,
To Taps at eleven and dreams of the sea,
We drilled and marched, studied and pored,
Over dusty fields and volumes of lore.
We drilled and drilled, and drilled some more,
Our “black booots” clad feet were tender and sore.
Days became weeks, weeks became months,
Time marched on, and so did the grunts.
Not all was tedium, boredom and gloomy,
We also played and took Jessies to movies.
With much ado and no time to waste,
Graduation drew nigh with too much haste.
Early in May the end was in sight.
Then we knew we earned the right,
To dress in our finest and go on parade,
As others before us who made the grade,
Like those who followed from then to now,
And those yet to come seeking to learn how.
We marched together for the final parade,
Stood stiffly at attention longing for shade.
Separate we came and strove to succeed,
To help ourselves and others in need.
We toiled as one for our mutual good.
Joyous we felt when united we stood.

Dorsey Yawn HS 1959 taught English At GMC. He later practiced Law in Milledgeville and was a State Court Judge for Baldwin County. Thanks, Dorsey, for this fine poem that reminds us that then as now United We Stand.
