The 1959 "Recall" is now available online

Celebration is in order!

At long last, after so much work…the 1959 GMC Recall yearbook is digitally available to the world.
The collection can be accessed through this URL - http://cdm15171.contentdm.oclc.org/

Image metadata is fully searchable and the images can be enlarged and printed.
We'll get a link on the GMC Library web site shortly.
Special thanks go to Dylan Stephens and Sara Bryant for getting this project off to a great start.
They have both done an excellent job over the last few months learning about digitization and thus making this dream a reality.
Thanks to Jane Simpson for funding the first stage of this effort.
And thanks to Dr. Fatih Oguz at VSU and Dr. Toby Graham at the DLG for their advice, support and encouragement. Enjoy.
.

Here is a photo of me at Zion National Park where I served as superintendent for nine years. I will be at Mesa Verde National Park this weekend and will miss the celebration but do want to pass along my best regards to everyone. It would be great to catch up with what's been happening the past fifty years.

After graduation from GMC, I completed a degree program at Ga Tech in civil engineering, was on active duty with the US Army for two years, duty stationed in Korea for thirteen wonderful months. I ended up at Ft Carson in Colorado and then pursued a career with the federal government - at first with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and then with the National Park Service.

I'd love to hear from everyone to find out what you've been doing. My email address is: donfalvey@yahoo.com

Herb-
Thanks for your posting on the Blog - a neat trip down memory lane!
And thanks, Ed for sending the letter concerning the celebration and for setting up the Blog site.

Have a great time, everyone...

United We Stood - A Poem by Dorsey Yawn in honor of the Class of '59

UNITED WE STOOD
By

T. DORSEY YAWN
© 2009

Dedicated to the GMC classes of 1959,
A group of young men ever so fine.

_______________________________

Separate we came from far and near,
Seeking to make our pathway clear.
Now we know what we did not then,
Knowledge shared by those ladies and men,
Who gave of themselves so we might learn
To think for ourselves, for wisdom to yearn.
From waking at dawn to the bugler’s reveille,
To Taps at eleven and dreams of the sea,
We drilled and marched, studied and pored,
Over dusty fields and volumes of lore.
We drilled and drilled, and drilled some more,
Our “black booots” clad feet were tender and sore.
Days became weeks, weeks became months,
Time marched on, and so did the grunts.
Not all was tedium, boredom and gloomy,
We also played and took Jessies to movies.
With much ado and no time to waste,
Graduation drew nigh with too much haste.
Early in May the end was in sight.
Then we knew we earned the right,
To dress in our finest and go on parade,
As others before us who made the grade,
Like those who followed from then to now,
And those yet to come seeking to learn how.
We marched together for the final parade,
Stood stiffly at attention longing for shade.
Separate we came and strove to succeed,
To help ourselves and others in need.
We toiled as one for our mutual good.
Joyous we felt when united we stood.

Dorsey Yawn HS 1959 taught English At GMC. He later practiced Law in Milledgeville and was a State Court Judge for Baldwin County. Thanks, Dorsey, for this fine poem that reminds us that then as now United We Stand.

Nat Smith

Talked with Nat Smith this afternoon. He is in the real estate business in Midway, GA, south of Savannah but spends his time between Midway and Milledgeville. He and his wife Karen plan to be with us at the reunion. Nat was a 2nd Lieutenant in Band Company and as you may well remember took up the baton in Major Osterman's absence.

Gene Creasy

THANKS SO MUCH. MY WIFE AND I WILL BE THERE -- WE'VE MADE RESERVATIONS AT THE FAIRFIELD INN.

REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE REUNION.

Myles writes to "Best Class Ever"

Best Class Ever,
Just can't express how disappointed I will be the weekend of the reunion. Unfortunately, "family first" kicks in and I will be at a wedding of my 50 year old cousin, Michael Veerkamp, who is getting married for the first time to a lovely lady, Celeste Golf, who is also getting married for the first time. I'll be with our family at Disney but will be thinking about all of you. Have fun, tell and retell old stories, take pictures. Herb I'll be in touch for the update.

Do you remember your High School sweetheart or Jessie you took to the movies at the Campus Theater on Sunday afternoons?
The Theater has been purchased by Georgia College & State University and they are spending millions to preserve our old theater. On the inside will be a bookstore, a coffee shop, and a "Black Box Theater."

Dean Robbins Sends a Message

Just a brief note to thank you for creating the web blog for the reunion. I visit it every day just to see if anything new has been added. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all the postings. I will not be able to be at the reunion, as I too have duties for my wife, but the blog in some way at least allows me to enjoy the great memories I have of all of you. For that I thank you.

As the years go by my memories of my time at GMC, as I remember them, are some of the fondest of my life.
Please express my best wishes to all who attend the reunion , and my regrets for not being able to join in on this celebration of 50 great years and great classmates.
kindest regards,
Dean

1960’s GMC Cadet Anonymously Establishes $100,000 Endowment To Honor Former Commandant

From The Cadence Fall 2008

A former cadet has stepped forward to establish a scholarship endowment honoring the legacy of Colonel William McCord Kemp, who gave extraordinary service to Georgia Military College for thirty-five years. The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, was a cadet at GMC under the leadership of Colonel Bill Kemp (at the time, Major Kemp) as Commandant of Cadets. The former cadet explained, “It was the contributions he made as Commandant for so many of us that I will never forget, and which have resulted in this honor of his memory. He was also a great, memorable teacher of mine, but as Commandant he was superb in many ways, having impacted the lives of so many individuals at a very critical time.” Colonel Kemp joined the GMC faculty in 1955-56, teaching history, political science, and world literature in the junior college and then becoming Commandant of Cadets in the fall of 1957. He served the institution well in many capacities until his retirement at the close of the academic year in 1990. In an article for a previous issue of The Cadence celebrating Colonel Kemp’s service at GMC and commemorating his passing in 1995, A. Alling Jones, HS ‘59, wrote, “Bill Kemp had a strong sense of right and wrong based on values he taught his students, as much by the way he lived and conducted himself as by any other method. He knew the mind of the adolescent male and seemed to be everywhere, all the time. He would anticipate the most secretly planned pranks and thwart any midnight forays which might arise among the corps of cadets. Underneath his
Olympian facade was a truly caring man concerned that his wards grow to become upright, responsible adults. We always respected his rule of order, looking up to him as a father figure in many instances. With the passage of time we have come to feel a deep affection for him and the wise ways, often underlined with subtle humor, by which he imparted the knowledge and code of conduct he always knew we would need later in life.”

The Colonel William M. Kemp Scholarship Endowment will provide a scholarship annually to a second-year junior college cadet who has demonstrated a high degree of motivation and integrity, and possesses the potential for future success if given some financial assistance. It is the intent of the donor that the scholarship honoring Colonel Kemp’s memory “…would always maintain the high standards that he set and demanded of his students, as demonstrated by the future achievements and successes of those receiving it.”

Those wishing to make donations to the Colonel William M. Kemp Scholarship Endowment should send their gifts, noting their intent, to the GMC Foundation, 201 E. Greene St., Milledgeville, GA 31061.

Lunch with Earlene

Had a nice luncheon meeting today at Sylvia's Restaurant with Earlene Hamilton. Joe Mobley was there as was my 1959 classmate, Herb Meyer, of Athens. Herb had so many funny memories of our classmates and kept us in stiches for over two hours. He had written a "Remember When" list, part of which I will publish soon.

Earlene tells me that hardly anyone has made reservations for the "Golden Brigade" Reunion, so let's get those reunion reservations as well as hotel reservations made. You need to go ahead and secure your hotel room as Milledgeville is having a Festival that same week-end and you may have trouble securing a room later. GMC rooms will be held for reservations through September 23rd

Happy Days Fifty Years Ago

Larry "Water Buffalo" Stafford (HS '59) has been working tirelessly to bring enthusiasm to our 50th Reunion. Larry is one of the most memorable cadets of our era. A gentleman to the manor born, a prince of friends, and a cadet ever in the forefront of cadet life at GMC. Larry continued through Junior College ('61) and rose to be Company Commander of "E" Company.
